Your key, never our server
In a zero knowledge system the service never holds the key that opens your data. Your key is generated on your device and stays there. It locks each note with AES-256-GCM before anything is sent, so the server receives ciphertext and nothing else.

A breach costs you nothing, because we hold nothing readable
If our servers were broken into, the attacker would carry away encrypted blocks. There are no readable notes to take. That is the whole point of the arrangement: what is stored is worthless without the key you keep.

Questions about zero knowledge
What does zero knowledge mean here?
That we have no way to read what you write. Notes are encrypted on your device with a key only you hold, and the server keeps ciphertext it cannot open.
How is that different from ordinary encryption?
Ordinary encryption protects data on the way and on the disk, but the company still holds a key at the other end. Here the key never leaves your device, so the ability to read your notes does not exist on our side at all.
What encryption is used?
AES-256-GCM, generated per account on the device. It is the same cipher that Signal and password managers rely on.
Is it free?
Yes, on the free plan by default. Nothing to upgrade in order to protect your notes, and the board and reminders are free too.
What if I lose my password?
You get a recovery key when encryption is set up. Lose both the password and that key and the notes cannot be recovered, by us or anyone. That is the cost of nobody else holding a way in.
Does it hold up across devices?
Yes. Notes stay encrypted the whole way between devices and are opened only when you sit down in front of one of them.
